Quek Boon Hui

Mr. Quek Boon Hui has been a band director for the past three decades. His versatility has enabled him to switch effortlessly between teaching young children in primary schools and adults in post-secondary institutions.

He was appointed as the band director of Bendemeer Primary School (BPS) Concert Band in 1984 and Maha Bodhi School (MBS) Symphonic Band in 1996. Under his professional and dedicated guidance, both bands have made tremendous improvements and achieved outstanding awards. Over the years, Mr. Quek has brought many school bands to great heights at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Central Judging. He has led his schools to titles of the highest prestige at SYF Band Competitions, namely the “Best Band of the Year” in 2000 for BPS Concert Band, 2002 and 2004 for MBS Symphonic Band. This year, both of his bands have attained Certificates of Distinction during the SYF Central Judging.

Under his direction, the MBS Symphonic Band achieved the Gold award at the 17th Australian International Music Festival in Sydney in 2006. He has also led the BPS and MBS bands to attain the Gold award in the Winter Band Festival in Hong Kong in 2012 and 2013 respectively.  Mr. Quek has been at the helm of major projects like a mass display of six primary school bands during the National Day Parade in 1993. Both of his bands were invited to perform as the Central Parade Band for the 2010 SYF Opening Ceremony at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. He has also been instrumental in setting up the Community Bands of Kim Seng and Moulmein Community Centre.

In addition, Mr. Quek was also appointed as the conductor of the Music Talent Development Centre (MTDC) Programme. It was a combined school band programme that lasted from 2010 to 2013, initiated by the Ministry of Education.
