Band Directors' Association (Singapore) 新加坡教师管乐协会

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, JOVAN NEO

At the heart of every thriving band programme lies something far greater than music itself is a strong and connected community.

The band movement in Singapore has never been built in isolation. It is sustained by directors, teachers, students, alumni, partners, and supporters who believe deeply in the value of what we do. As we look ahead, it becomes increasingly clear that our continued growth depends not on individual success, but on how we support and elevate one another.

The Band Directors’ Association (Singapore) remains committed to strengthening these connections across the ecosystem. Our partnerships with Institutes of Higher Learning, the Singapore Armed Forces Band, and the Singapore Police Force Band, alongside wind and percussion retailers and music publishers. This reflect a shared responsibility to create opportunities, raise standards, and ensure that our band community continues to flourish.

At the same time, we recognise that the largest and most important context in which our work takes place is within schools under the Ministry of Education. Our students are, first and foremost, part of Singapore’s national education system, and our band programmes are deeply embedded within it. As such, it is essential that we continue to engage in ongoing conversations with MOE as to ensure alignment, to advocate for the needs of our programmes, and to contribute meaningfully to the broader educational mission.

We recognise that the educational landscape is evolving. What was once sufficient is no longer enough. Today, our role extends beyond achieving musical excellence; we are called to prepare students to be thoughtful, adaptable, and engaged individuals. This means rethinking how we rehearse, how we lead, and how we inspire, whilst ensuring that our programmes remain meaningful and relevant in a rapidly changing world.

More importantly, we must continue to nurture a genuine love for the arts. Sustaining interest in music is not just about performance outcomes, but about creating experiences that resonate, inspire, and stay with our students long after they leave the band room.

There is still much that we can do together. By strengthening our collective efforts, sharing knowledge, and uplifting one another, we can build a more vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking band community.

Let us continue to move forward with purpose, ensuring that wind band music in Singapore not only endures, but thrives for generations to come.
