Jovan Neo

 

Jovan Neo‘s lifelong love for music began to flourish during his time as a talented Euphonium player at Montfort Secondary School. Fortunate to receive mentorship from esteemed music educators, such as Mr. Ng Eng Kee and Mrs. Arlene Chan, Jovan’s passion for wind band conducting and music composition took root.

Seeking to refine his skills, Jovan pursued further studies under the guidance of renowned figures in the field, including Dr. Lee Tian Tee, A/Prof Ho Hwee Long, Dr. John Sharpley, and Dr. Zechariah Goh. After completing his studies, he embarked on a teaching career, starting as an Assistant Band Director for the Anglo Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band and the Anglo Chinese School (Barker) Military Band in 2003.

In 2008, Jovan took on the role of Band Director for Tanjong Katong Secondary School Band, a position he continues to hold with unwavering dedication and humility. Under his guidance, the band has achieved numerous accolades and awards, including the esteemed Display Band of the Year title in 2012 and 2014. Jovan’s commitment to music education extends beyond Tanjong Katong Secondary School, as he also serves as the Band Director for Temasek Junior College Symphonic Bands (Integrated Programme and Junior College), the Resident Conductor for the Montfort Alumni Wind Orchestra, and the Tanjong Katong Alumni Band.

Jovan’s musical journey has encompassed meaningful experiences beyond the education sector. He had the privilege of serving as a bandsman in the esteemed Singapore Police Force Band. His contribution to the band’s musical development and his talent for composition and arrangement led to the creation of numerous notable pieces performed at state and police functions.

Recently, Jovan’s passion for marching band music has been acknowledged on a wider scale, as he was elected as the Vice-President of the Asian Marching Band Confederation. This esteemed position highlights his commitment to promoting and advancing the art form throughout Asia.

Alongside his responsibilities, Jovan assumes the role of President in the Band Directors’ Association (Singapore), where he actively engages in enhancing the music community. To further enrich his contributions, he is currently pursuing a Master of Music Leadership at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, allowing him to gain invaluable insights and refine his skills in music education.
